This is a soft-cover, premium paper, full-colour version of this title.

This is essentially the author’s tribute to her grandfather James “Jim” Hunter who served as a bombardier in a Handley Page Halifax bomber during the Second World War.And like 60% of RCAF aircrew at that time, Jim Hunter did not primarily serve with the RCAF but rather was (eventually) posted to No. 158 (RAF) Squadron at RAF Station Lissett near Bidlinton in Yorkshire as part of our Commonwealth commitment. Using the diary and notes of her grandfather’s navigator and pilot crew-mates as a basis, Tenille has then laid out a complete history of the crew’s wartime operations and experiences. The code letter of their Halifax bomber aircraft, which was “N” or “N for Nan” in wartime lingo, therefore helps makes up the title.

The crew came together in training and she follows them through the operational training unit and the heavy conversion unit phases into active operations with No. 158 Squadron. The diary notes help personalize the story. To provide an accurate historical backdrop, the author has then woven in excerpts from the official Royal Air Force campaign narrative that provides the overarching operational details and statistics. Moreover, to further flesh out the narrative, she has interlaced many other details, background information, maps, and diagrams for all of the various wartime operations that the crew participated in. The amount of accurate research which went into this “labour of love” is also clearly evident in the various background explanations provided by the “extra intel” segments scattered throughout all of the chapters.
